Do They Know What You’re Worth? Better Yet, Do You?

When you are sitting at the salary negotiating table, don’t take anything sitting down.  There is a lot to know about realistic salary expectations and ways to find out.  It pays to research the pay scales for jobs similar to yours and in your geographical area.  Set your accepted pay range for neater negotiating once the process really begins.  Make a list of your strengths and why you are worth more than the last applicant.  Most important, practice your negotiation skills with a friend.  Remember that the process is all part of thoughtful interaction that, if carried out skillfully, will earn you what you are worth in your new position.
